In 2004 Enel Green Power employed the ESApro suite for the design of geothermic plants. At first ESApro was used for the modeling and the driven layout of steam pipelines transporting the steam delivered by the extraction wells all the way up to the turbines of the geothermic power station and also the piping lines of the power station. Compared to those instruments used in the past, the new system provided: a greater functionality, the guarantee of future compatibility and a significant reduction of the engineering costs.



  • .Land survey inserted into the graphic environment

    Land surveys, obtained through external instruments and programs, are then transferred into the AutoCAD environment with all the necessary information for the land modeling.

  • .Steam pipelines routing

    The steam pipelines, bends and accessories included, are routed on the basis of the existing land model through ESApro 3D Piping.

  • .Dimensioning and modeling of the supports and auxiliary elements

    The procedure automatically composes the steam pipeline complex supports as a function of the pipeline height from ground level. The support components are taken from a standard parts Enel library. All the accessories also (tanks, foundations and wells…) can then be inserted so as to complete the project.

  • .Stress analysis

    The pipeline model, with all its supports, is then exported into the stress analysis software. Once the calculation is completed, data are returned to create a customized view displaying the defcetions line and the related displacements.

  • .Automatic generation of orthographic views and material lists

    The new program automatically provides specific 2D views (altimetric profiles, Gauss-Boaga coordinates, deflections) and piping material lists, as well as supports and accessories.

Arneg, looking for an advanced system for the dimensioning of its refrigerating plants could not find any suitable product on the market. Arneg then chose to commission the development of a program to a partner, specialized in the development of CAD applications for the industrial plant design.

ESAin provided Arneg with a solution made of two integrated modules: Layout and Dimensioning. As a result Arneg was able to obtain both accurate estimates, a startling time reduction and also material savings, thanks to the optimization of the plant components and the absolute precision of the assembly drawings.

  • .Layout

    This module, operating in the AutoCAD environment, is dedicated to the driven layout of the sales outlets and its related estimate. In particular it manages the choice and the insertion of the library components (benches, shelves, cells, condensers, etc.) and provides all the necessary graphic instruments for a rapid and accurate layout drawing up. Once the layout is finalized, the program automatically provides the component lists and the cost estimate. As this is an instrument thought up for the sales team, the user interface has been created for easy of use even for operators who are not very familiar with the CAD systems. The program has been so conceived to integrate with the company’s ERP, with which it shares the tables of the items and the component lists, in order to ensure a steady and immediate information flow.

  • .Dimensioning

    Right from the layout design, the module performs the routing of the interconnecting piping of the plant components. Once the routes are defined, the program develops the optimization calculation of the pipe diameters in accordance with the required refrigerating power and the head losses. Once the calculation is finished, the program generates the material list and the required single line drawings for assembly.


Varian Inc. one of the first societies in Silicon Valley, is leader in the technology of high and ultra-high vacuum since the 50’. In 2010 was bought by Agilent Technologies Inc. and continued its activity under the new name.

At the beginning of the 90’ the Varian factory in Turin decided to acquire a system for the management of technical documents and the generation of the product structure: it basically was a forerunner of today’s PLM system. Initially AutoCAD was integrated with the database containing all the necessary components for the realization of the products in catalogue. Then the system used by the technical department was made available for all the other business purposes (test, store, purchasing department, marketing) and also to the external suppliers. Furthermore the software has been integrated with the transition to the 3D design.


The automatic procedure has optimized the process and the internal work flows with great benefits as far as timing, costs, and reliability concern.



  • .The first relase of the program

    The project started in the early 90’, when Varian operated mainly in 2D with AutoCAD. Initially AutoCAD was integrated with the database containing all the components for the realization of the product catalog, thus allowing the user to operate on the components drawing simply by selecting the related part codes: the mechanism which automatically generates the product structure, when publishing the project drawings, is the core of the program. Aside there are functions for the management of the revisions and the approvals, and the security systems and the control of access levels. The database initially counted more than 8.000 records and it gradually self-sustained with new components and subassemblies created over through the years.

  • .Connecting the system to all the other business functions

    The technical office has made all the data available to the other business functions such as test, store, purchase department, marketing and the external suppliers, thus optimizing the project, reduction of errors and time to market

  • .The transition to 3D

    When the company switched from 2D to 3D design systems, the software was integrated with the historic Mechanical Desktop of Autodesk at first, and then with other mechanical modelers that came about one after the other abreast of AutoCAD.

  • .The advantages

    The program has been constantly developed over the years: today it is based on SQL Server and it is integrated with AutoCAD and Solidworks. In spite of the fact that numerous standard products have became available in the field of PLM for quite some time now, this program is used as a stand-alone instrument. This demonstrates that, in this particular field, a solution that has been developed ad hoc with full collaboration between client and supplier guarantees a level of efficiency than standard systems, which, although configurable, will never be able to reach. In fact standard systems hardly satisfy the specific needs of the evolved user who has to manage particularly sophisticated problems.
